PlayStation 4 Will Appeal to Girl Gamers

Legendary tales whispered to children right before bedtime were stories that consisted of gripping mythical creatures; and those mythical creatures included harpies, dragons, chimeras, and best of all, girl gamers. You see, a few years back, girl gamers didn’t really exist. Well, they sort of did, but they were ultra rare, like a Lugia or something.

In all seriousness, though, gamers and gaming have been, more often than not, stereotyped as a male activity. Much of society portrayed young boys as having their eyes glued to a television while tightly gripping a Nintendo 64 controller while little girls were playing dollhouse with their blonde Barbie’s dressed in hot pink; a bit cliché, of course.
Let’s get real. In these modern times where technology is seemingly king, there is no restriction as to who should play what. Gaming isn’t gender specific. It’s expanding and this myth of a girl gamer is a striving part of today’s reality. Gaming has become a social activity; awkward enough because it sort of causes isolation, even while in large groups. Nonetheless, gaming has surpassed the days of gender bias.

Sony’s games chief, Andrew House, has recognized this event. He’s got high hopes for the PS4 as he has noticed the increase in women who play video games. “I think the key is to have people — and increasingly women — with different sensibilities creating different games. It is not all about shoot ’em up games,” said Andrew House. “We are not going down the route of making the console pink of course.” I have to agree with him here. Most of today’s games follow a boiled down formula. Many games can sadly be classified as “shoot ‘em up games.”
“The key is getting games developers — who are going to make the next Angry Birds — excited about the PS4. And they are, “ continued Mr. House. Angry Birds is largely successful and that goes without saying. Many of the gamers who play Angry Birds are female; but of course, they aren’t the only ones. Andrew House has gotten that in mind and is looking to expand the PS4’s audience beyond the “young male gamer.”
I take this as extremely satisfying news. Sure, the PS4 needs to expand its audience; but they also need to utilize imagination. If having female gamers in mind is the key to this expansion, then by all means, go right ahead! I’m getting weary of playing these “shoot ‘em games.” I want something different, something I’ve never played before. I want something to marvel about and something that will make me say, “wow.”
